A business card holds far less than people try to put on it. The reliable hierarchy is name first and largest, then role and company, then the two or three contact methods you actually want used. Listing a landline, a mobile, an email, a website and three social handles forces every element to shrink and leaves the reader deciding which one you meant.

Keep text at 8pt or above. Anything smaller is genuinely difficult to read at arm's length, which is the only distance at which a card is ever read.

Business cards are the least forgiving print job there is, because they are small and usually have colour running to the edge.

Presses print onto a larger sheet and trim down, and that trim is accurate to about a millimetre rather than exactly. If your background stops precisely at the card edge, a trim landing slightly outside leaves a white sliver along one side — immediately visible on a dark card and ruinous across a whole run.

The fix is bleed: extend any colour that touches an edge about 3mm beyond the trim line, so the cut passes through your artwork rather than to it. Equally, keep all text and important detail 3 to 5mm inside the trim, because drift works in both directions and a phone number sitting hard against the edge can lose its outer digits.

Home printing is fine for a temporary need — an event next week, a card while a proper run is being produced. Expect visible limitations: consumer printers cannot print to the edge, so a full-bleed design is not achievable, and card stock is thinner than commercial equivalents.

For anything you will hand to clients, a print shop is worth the modest cost. Ask them for their required bleed, their preferred file format and their colour setup before you export, and follow that specification rather than guessing — they answer the question daily and would much rather spend two minutes on email than reprint a job.

Order a small quantity first if you can. Details that look right on screen — a colour that prints darker than expected, text tighter to the edge than intended — are much cheaper to discover across fifty cards than five hundred.
