The difference matters because the second kind is far more common than people expect. Many forms distributed as PDFs were designed for printing and have no interactive fields at all, which is why other software refuses to let you type on them. Being able to place text anywhere on the page is what makes those usable without a printer.

If you filled interactive fields, flatten the document before returning it. This merges your answers into the page itself rather than leaving them as live field values.

Two things go wrong otherwise. Some viewers display filled values while others show the empty template, which is why a completed form occasionally arrives at the other end looking blank — a genuinely common and frustrating failure. And live fields remain editable by whoever receives the document, so the answers you submitted can be altered afterwards.

Flattening removes both problems. Everyone sees the same thing, and what they see is fixed.

Match the size and alignment of your text to the form's printed labels. Text that sits noticeably above or below the line, or in a conspicuously different size, makes an otherwise valid submission look improvised.

Check the completed form at full page size rather than zoomed in. Answers that appeared correctly positioned while working closely can sit visibly off-line when the whole page is in view, and text can overflow the box it belongs to.

Where a form asks for initials on multiple pages or a signature in more than one place, work through the whole document before downloading. Returning a form with page four missed is the most common reason for one to come back.

Form filling happens in your browser, so what you type is never uploaded or stored. This is the relevant guarantee given what forms actually contain — the tool's typical use involves entering a date of birth, an address, a national insurance or social security number, bank details, medical history or immigration information.
