Reorder the pages of a PDF

Scans come out shuffled, chapters get assembled in the wrong sequence, and an appendix sometimes lands before the section it belongs to. Reorder Pages lets you rearrange the pages of a PDF into the correct order, so your final document reads logically from start to finish.

It saves you from rescanning or rebuilding a file just because a few pages ended up out of place.

Rearranging by dragging

Upload your PDF, drag the pages into the sequence you want, and download the reordered document. Page content is untouched — only the order changes — so nothing is re-rendered and no quality is lost regardless of how many times you rearrange.

Working visually is the point. Reordering by typing page numbers is error-prone because every move shifts the positions of everything after it, whereas seeing the pages makes an out-of-place appendix or an inverted pair immediately obvious.

The two-sided scanning problem

The most common reason a document needs reordering is a double-sided original scanned on a single-sided feeder. You scan all the fronts, then all the backs, and end up with pages in the order 1, 3, 5, 7 … 8, 6, 4, 2.

This is worth recognising because the fix is mechanical rather than a matter of dragging pages one at a time. The second half of the file is the reverse of the even pages, so the correct sequence interleaves the first half forwards with the second half backwards.

If you scan double-sided documents regularly, feeding the reverse stack in the opposite direction produces 1, 3, 5 … 2, 4, 6, which is a simple interleave rather than an interleave plus a reversal — noticeably less work every time.

Check the result before you rely on it

Read the reordered document through at least in outline before sending it. Page order errors are peculiarly hard to spot in the tool and painfully obvious to the recipient, and a bundle submitted out of order is often rejected rather than queried.

Pay particular attention to the joins. Pages either side of a move are where sequence errors concentrate, and a document that reads correctly at the start and end can still have a transposed pair in the middle.

Where pages continue across a break, the last line of one page and the first line of the next should follow on. That continuity check catches most ordering mistakes faster than counting.

Rearranged locally

Reordering runs in your browser and the file is never uploaded or stored. Since this is usually applied to scanned material — legal bundles, medical records, signed agreements that came back as a shuffled stack — the document in hand is often exactly the sort you would not want to send anywhere in order to tidy it up.
