Remove a password from a PDF you own

Password-protected PDFs are secure, but they are also tedious when you have to type the password every single time you open a file you already have permission to use. Unlock PDF removes the password from a document you can already open, producing an unrestricted copy that you can read, print and share without being prompted each time.

This is handy for documents you receive regularly from a bank or provider, where re-entering the password on every view quickly becomes a chore.

What this tool does and does not do

Upload the protected PDF, enter the password you normally use to open it, and download an unrestricted copy. The requirement is the important part: you need the working password. This removes the nuisance of repeated prompts on a document you already have access to.

It is not a way to open a document you cannot already open. Where a file is protected by an open password, the content is genuinely encrypted, and without the password there is nothing to recover. Any service claiming otherwise for properly encrypted files is either mistaken or selling something that does not work.

Permission restrictions are a different case. Flags that disallow printing or copying while leaving the document freely openable are advisory rather than cryptographic, and clearing them on your own documents is straightforward.

Use it on documents you are entitled to

The legitimate uses are the everyday ones. A bank statement that arrives encrypted every month and needs the password typed on every view. An archive of your own documents where the protection has outlived its purpose. A file you need to print or extract text from, where restrictions are getting in the way of work you are entitled to do.

Removing protection from documents belonging to someone else, or circumventing restrictions on licensed material, is a different matter — potentially a breach of contract or of copyright depending on the document and where you are. The password requirement means this tool cannot help with that anyway, but the principle is worth stating.

Think about what you are removing

Protection was usually applied for a reason. An unlocked copy of a payslip or a medical letter is a document that will open for anyone who finds it — on a shared computer, in a synced cloud folder, or on a lost laptop.

If you unlock a document for convenience, consider where the unlocked copy lives. Keeping it inside an encrypted disk or an access-controlled folder restores the protection at a different layer and is usually more practical than re-entering a password on every read.

It is also worth keeping the protected original rather than replacing it, so the secured version still exists if you need to forward it on.

Processed locally

Unlocking happens in your browser, so neither the document nor the password is uploaded. This is a case where that guarantee is worth more than usual — you would be handing a third party both an encrypted confidential document and the key to it in the same transaction.
